Maintenance

Golf Cart Battery Maintenance

Inspection
  • Examine the outside appearance of the battery. The tops of the batteries and terminals connections should be clean, free of dirt and corrosion, and dry.
  • If fluids are on the top of the battery this may mean that the battery is being over-watered or over charged.
  • Check battery cables and connections. Replace any damaged cables. Tighten any loose connections. Spray terminals with battery protectant spray.

Watering
  • Deep cycle batteries need to eb watered periodically. The frequency depends upon battery usage and operating temperatures. Check new batteries every few weeks to determine the watering frequency for your application. It is normal for batteries to need more watering as they age.
    • Fully Charge batteries before adding DISTILLED water.
    • Remove the vent caps and place them upside down so that dirt does not get on the underside.
    • If the electrolyte level is barely covering the plates, add distilled water to 1/8" over the plates. Secure Caps.
Cleaning
  • Check that all vent caps are secured properly on battery.
  • Clean the top of battery, terminals and connections with a cloth or brush.
  • Apply a THIN coat of terminal spray.
  • Keep the area around the batteries clean and dry.
  • Batteries should be fully charged after each use.
  • Charge in well-ventilated areas.
  • Do NOT charge with an extension cord.
Storage
  • Batteries self-discharge during storage.
  • Always charge your batteries AT LEAST every 2 weeks.
  • Stored batteries will have to be given a boost charge if left for several weeks.
Maximizing the Performance of your Battery, Maintaining Warranty
  • Follow all procedures above.
  • Do not discharge your battery to more than 80%. This safety factor will eliminate the chance of damaging your battery.
  • Your batteries should be kept charged and watered. If not this will void your warranty. If a warranty claim is filled the battery will be sent back to Trojan and the company will not be able to replace until results come back from Trojan. Batteries are not warrantied if they are not installed at the time of purchase by the company.
